I often like to tell clients my role is to help them see the forest because they’re so deep in the trees. This is also true with writing. UAA’s Enrollment Services leadership asked me to help their employees more effectively reach students, their most critical audience. We developed a writing workshop to teach them good writing habits.
Following the workshop, I worked with one person from each department to edit individual pieces of correspondence using a system to make sure the most important information wasn’t buried. Before starting to rewrite, staff first highlighted the purpose, action needed, and results the recipient should expect for each piece. This helped keep the focus on the reason for each mailing and the intended audience.
